Migration in and out of East and Southeast Europe: Values, Networks, Well-Being

The Third Annual Conference of the Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS, Regensburg) "Migration in and out of East and Southeast Europe: Values, Networks, Well-Being" will take place in Regensburg, Germany, on July 2-4, 2015.

Migration is a key driver of social change, it shapes political landscapes, creates and disrupts social networks, changes population structures, transforms values and attitudes, impacts on labour markets, and affects living standards and well-being. Especially since the 19th century, intense international and domestic migration has had a significant impact on the societies of East and Southeast Europe. Many countries in the region have been prominent emigration countries, while at the same time being major destinations for immigrants and experiencing large-scale domestic migration.

This conference aims at exploring a range of social, economic and cultural effects of migration on the countries of East and Southeast Europe. To facilitate a multi-disciplinary dialogue between scholars from history, economics, and cognate fields of the humanities and social sciences, presentations should concentrate on the period from the 19th century to the present. Specific topics include, but are not confined to:

·         Determinants, patterns, and consequences of migration

·         Expectations, risks and migrant strategies

·         Labour market impact

·         Education and skill levels

·         Remittances, changes in living standards and well-being

·         Transformation of values and attitudes, social capital and trust

·         Policy responses and impact on political development

·         Social networks and diasporas

·         Return migration and re-integration of repatriates

·         Long-term effects and path dependencies
