Measuring Human Development and Capabilities in High-income Countries

The Scientific Committee of the Italian National Research Project (PRIN) on “Measuring Human Development and Capabilities in Italy: Methodological and Empirical Issues” is pleased to announce the Conference Measuring Human Development and Capabilities in High-income Countries. In this Conference we intend to present and discuss the main results of the two-year research project, as well as other scientific works related to the project theme.

The Conference will be held on April 14-15, 2014 at the Roma Tre University, Rome (Italy).

The Scientific Committee invites submissions on topics related to the measurement of human development, capabilities and well-being in Italy and other high-income countries. Please submit an abstract of no more than 500 words and three keywords in pdf format to capabitaly2014@uniroma3.it . For full consideration, all abstracts must be submitted by January 31, 2014. Only a small number of abstracts will be selected. More conference details will be circulated at a later date.

Our aims
The international debate on human development and the use of the capability approach to measure and assess freedoms, well-being and related phenomena has dominantly concentrated on low- and mid- income countries. Our aim is to bring this debate in high-income countries, and especially in Italy and EU. This is a focal moment given that the effects of the current economic crisis have usually evaluated only in terms of standard economic parameters, with little or no emphasis on how people are faring in terms of education, health, security, housing or social relations. How can be freedoms and well-being conceptualized in high-income countries? What are the specific choices to be made to measure human development, freedoms and well-being in high-income countries? How can we select dimensions and indicators? Which statistical/econometric techniques can help us? How strong is inequality in capabilities and well-being within a country? These are only examples of research questions that we intend to examine in this Conference.
