The study of Communication is an ever-evolving field of inquiry grounded in both humanistic and social-scientific approaches within the liberal arts and sciences. As researchers, teachers, and students, we focus on communication as a tool for doing the work of social life --how, why, and with what consequences people exchange messages. We offer research and study in many areas, including:

The Department of Communication at the University of Illinois ranks among the top 10 departments in the field of communication in the United States. Because of our strong liberal arts approach to education, our program prepares students for employment as leaders in a wide range of positions in the private and public sectors.
Because diversity is essential to a rich research and learning environment, the Department of Communication is dedicated to promoting diversity within its curriculum, in its perspectives, and among its students, faculty, and staff.  We are strongly committed to fostering a supportive environment for individuals from historically underrepresented or disadvantaged backgrounds.
