Institute for East and Southeast European Studies

The Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS) in Regensburg is a non-university-affiliated research institute which was founded on January 1st, 2012, as a result of the union of the Eastern European Institute and the Institute for South East European Studies. The IOS continues the work of these two institutions, both steeped in tradition, in a new form. It distinguishes itself by the pooling of historical and economic expertise and the research on Eastern and Southeastern Europe. Another important characteristic is its strong international perspective. Its three main activities are:

  • Research: The IOS investigates economic and historical developments in Eastern and Southeastern Europe; research focuses in particular on comparative and transnational perspectives as well as interdisciplinary approaches. Regional emphases are on Southeastern Europe and the region of the former Soviet Union.
  • Scientific Infrastructure and Services: The IOS publishes journals, book series, working papers and background surveys; it organizes events and offers electronic databases as well as research portals.
  • Library: With more than 300,000 media units in collection, the library ranks internationally among the leading research libraries for Eastern and Southeastern Europe. In addition to its literature collection, the library also pursues setting-up research environments and digitising of selected stocks from the collection.

Other IOS activities include university teaching, advising post-graduate students and visiting fellows, and advising politicians and the public.

The institute is run by the Foundation for Eastern European and Southeastern European Research, a public foundation. The basic funding is provided by the Free State of Bavaria, represented by the Bavarian State Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs, Science and the Arts; in addition, the foundation also acquires third party funds for research projects and for the development of research infrastructure.

IOS is one of three independent member institutes of the Research Centre for Eastern and Southeastern Europe (Wissenschaftszentrum Ost- und Südosteuropa Regensburg WiOS). It is an affiliated institute of the University of Regensburg with which it cooperates closely on various levels. The IOS is one of the participating institutes of the Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies which is funded by the German Initiative of Excellence.
