Special Session on Social/Societal Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship over the last decades has become institutionalized as a multidisciplinary field of research including interfaces with geography, economics, sociology and organization theory. Areas of research for these encounters include innovation, regional development and, more recently, social and societal entrepreneurship. While social entrepreneurship underlines the role of social means and ends in the entrepreneurial process, societal entrepreneurship puts special emphasis on the integration of entrepreneurship into society and its institutions. This integration is especially interesting in a spatial perspective. The aim of the proposed special session is to further elaborate on entrepreneurship as a phenomenon that goes beyond the strong individual and growing firm. Possible fields of inquiry include:

• Where, and in what way, does the social/societal appear in existing spatial views onentrepreneurship?
• What happens to the social/social aspect on entrepreneurship in a globalizing world?
• How do social, economic and ecological forces combine to make an entrepreneurial and sustainable context for community development?
• How is social/societal entrepreneurship constructed as processes that cross the boundaries between the private, public and voluntary sectors?
• How can existing theories on entrepreneurship and local/regional development combine into models for ‘glocal’ strategies?
• What is the character of supportive environments and organizational contexts that is conducive for the flourishing of social/societal entrepreneurship? What methods do research into social/societal entrepreneurship call for?
• Can the emerging creative industries be considered as an especially important context for social/societal entrepreneurship?
• What settings are conducive for the emergence and institutionalization of social/societal entrepreneurship?
