Relational Research in the Social Sciences: concepts and methodologies

Inaugural Academic Symposium of the Relational Academics Forum (a part of the Relational Thinking Network), 16 September 2015, from 10.30am – 5pm, at St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge, UK.

The Relational Academics Forum is part of the Relational Thinking Network (RTn) - a growing movement of individuals and organisations committed to exploring and developing a relational perspective on life. Building on several books and numerous other publications from the early 1990s, this approach puts human relationships at the heart of all forms of knowledge and action. The 2015 Annual Conference of the Relational Thinking Network (RTn), on the theme of “Relational Risk & Sustainability: Building strong companies, organizations and communities”, takes place from the evening of September 16 to the evening of September 18, 2015.

Immediately before the RTn Annual Conference, the Symposium of the Relational Academics Forum will take place at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, UK, on 16 September (10.30 am to 5.00 pm) on the theme of:

Relational Research in the Social Sciences: concepts and methodologies

The aim of the day will be to gain an initial inter-disciplinary overview of relational themes within the academy, to network among scholars interested in pursuing a relational approach to their discipline, and to develop an understanding of the distinctive characteristics of such an approach. Papers are invited on all foundational aspects of relational thinking in academic research and scholarship in the social sciences broadly construed, including law, politics and policy studies, economics, sociology, education, psychology, management and business studies. Papers may offer studies of existing uses of the concept of ‘relational’ in specific disciplines, reviews of the state of relational research, connections and dissonances between current methodologies and the developing body of Relational literature, discipline-specific perspectives on relationships, and possible future avenues for research agendas.

Abstracts (around 500 words) should be sent to Ms. Marjon Busstra, for the attention of the conference chair, Professor Julian Rivers, by 15 April 2015. A maximum of eight papers will be chosen for presentation. Authors of the selected papers will be informed by 15 May 2015. The complete text of the chosen papers must be submitted for circulation to participating scholars by 15 August 2015.
