Poverty Reduction in Asia: Drivers, Best Practices and Policy Initiatives

The conference will take place in Seoul, South Korea, on August 21-22, 2013. The deadline for submission of substantial Abstracts is May 20, 2013.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB), in collaboration with the School of Economics, Sogang University in Korea and Emory University in the US, invites submissions of substantial abstracts, or preferably completed but unpublished papers that focus on poverty and related issues, in the developing Asia-Pacific.

Theoretical, methodological and empirical research and policy oriented papers are welcome provided that findings, conclusions and policy recommendations are based on solid evidence and appropriate methods. Manuscripts can focus on Asia as a whole, group of countries or individual economies in Asia.

Travel costs

ADB will cover reasonable travel and accommodation costs of one author per accepted paper.

Publishing opportunities

Papers presented at the workshop will be considered for a special issue of a leading academic journal and a book volume.

Topics

Papers can deal with but are not limited to the following topics:

Determinants and causes of poverty and its changes
Consequences and impacts of poverty on human capital formation, growth, consumption and so on
Assessment of poverty strategies and policies
The role of government, NGOs and other institutions in poverty reduction
Rural-urban migration and poverty
Vulnerability to poverty
Poverty decomposition (e.g., into chronic and transient components)
Comparative study on poverty issues in Asia and other regions

Several prominent economists specialized in poverty analysis will be invited to attend the workshop.
