Research Economics - (Lead / Senior) Specialist - Multiple openings at the Inter-American Development Bank

The Inter-American Development Bank, the largest source of financing for development in Latin America and the Caribbean, is seeking highly qualified Research Economists to work in the Department of Research and Chief Economist (RES) (posting is for current and future vacancies).
RES economists publish regularly in refereed academic journals and pursue policy orientated analytical work that informs the Bank regarding the development challenges and appropriate policy responses and improves the effectiveness and relevance of the operations of the Bank in its member countries.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Coordinate and conduct economic research, identifying particular challenges and issues, applying theoretical or empirical economic analysis and developing policy recommendations.

• Lead and/or participate in the conception, organization and publication of the Bank's flagship publication Development in the Americas, leveraging internal and external resources and addressing new research issues to encourage policy discussions and enhance the visibility and impact of the Bank.

• Disseminate research results to academic and non-academic audiences, highlighting possible policy implications and adjusting the language and focus to the audience.

• Build and coordinate networks for disseminating research findings, promoting cooperative research initiatives, and discussing policy issues within and outside the Bank.

• Education: Ph.D. in Economics (completed at the time of appointment) from an internationally recognized university. Ph.D. in Political Science from programs with strong quantitative focus will also be considered.

REQUIREMENTS
• Experience: Positions offered are at different grade levels, depending on the responsibilities of the position. Minimum experience requirements range from 4 to 6 years of academic and/or policy-oriented practical experience at the national and international level. For all grades, research relevant to Latin America and the Caribbean region is essential. Preference will be given to candidates that combine a strong academic profile with an interest in policy and that have worked on topics relevant to development. For positions at more senior levels, preferred candidates would combine a strong research background and a distinguished publication record with experience as a policymaker is a plus (Languages: Fluency required in English and either Spanish or Portuguese.

Areas of Interest: Research Economists are sought in several fields, particularly: Macroeconomics, Applied Microeconomics. Natural Resources, Agriculture, Environmental, Labor and Developmental Economics, as well as Political Economy.

SELECTION PROCESS
The final selection of candidates will be made by a selection panel of IDB staff that will determine the best fit of background with positions available in the Research Department. Only the strongest candidates will be selected for interviews and will be contacted by telephone. Applicants are asked to not call Bank staff for information on their application status.

Some members of the selection panel will interview candidates at the LACEA (Latin American and Caribbean Economic Association) 16th Annual Meeting, taking place in Santiago, Chile on November 10th to 12th, 2011.
